Motawaazy or ‘Wazzy’ as he is known at home, is Catterick's Equine Ambassador as part of the ROR Horses for Courses programme. Motawaazy ran 11 times at Catterick between June 2021 and May 2024, winning on 4 occasions. He has now retired from racing and has moved home with his owner Victoria Greetham and her daughter Zara. We will be checking in regularly with him to see how he is enjoying life after racing!

Wazzy’s life beyond racing is progressing well and he has had a busy summer. He is out in a big field of good grass 24/7 enjoying eating and getting a bit rounder than when he was a racehorse!

His jumping is coming along well. As a flat horse, he had never jumped before but after doing a few cross country and pole work clinics he has really gained confidence and got the hang of it.

We began by taking his best friend Nipper to the clinics with him, who is an established and keen jumper. Wazzy was much more confident following him at first and now is happy to jump on his own. He has done a variety of small obstacles including logs, tyres, steps, ditches and water complexes.

Of course it is the 6 week school holidays so Wazzy has had plenty of pampering by Zara and her friends, including giving him a “haircut”, painting his hooves with pink glitter and putting pink plaiting bands in his mane and tail! Zara took Wazzy to a pony club camp where he behaved impeccably.

They got clear rounds in lead rein 30cm jumping winning 2 rosettes and a medal which she was over the moon with.

Many people commented on his excellent manners and quiet nature, being quite shocked when I explained that he was a 7 time winning racehorse!

Last week Zara’s instructor Ben borrowed Wazzy for a long endurance ride along the Transpennine Trail which they both enjoyed.

Wazzy is doing lots of different things with the hope that as Zara gets older he can teach her what he has learnt.
